New chalets and accessibility upgrades complete

Accessibility at Turner Caravan Park has improved greatly with the construction of a universally accessible chalet and an upgraded all-access toilet-shower unit to one of the amenity blocks.

Shire of Augusta Margaret River Holiday Parks and Camping Ground Manager Hettie Enderes said the Shire was committed to improving accessibility, so when demand called for two new chalets, no effort was spared in making one universally accessible.

“Turner Caravan Park is located near the beautiful Blackwood River and aims to cater to everyone – and that includes people of all abilities,” she said.

“That’s why we went above-and-beyond in improving the park’s accessibility.”

The Shire worked closely with building designers and access consultants to ensure the universally accessible chalet and upgraded amenity block would be compliant with the relevant requirements.

It also consulted with the Shire’s Community Access and Inclusion Reference Group and took on the group’s valuable suggestions and feedback.

The universally accessible chalet along with the other newly-constructed chalet complement three existing chalets, which opened December 2017.

Ms Enderes said the two new chalets opened last month and were already experiencing impressive occupancy rates.

“We’ve had an influx of visitors to the region over the past few months, so the expanded capacity was a welcome addition in time for summer,” she said.

“But more than expanded capacity, the universally accessible chalet also expands accessibility, which means more people can safely and comfortably enjoy the park and all it has to offer.”
